ShowMes and WhoCans
Children love showing us what they can do. Listen to young children enough and you will hear a lot of “Mom, look at this” and “Hey coach, guess what I can do”. Use ShowMes and WhoCans in sports to get your players actively involved in skill acquisition and mastery. If you can demonstrate something, using the visual and verbal communication channels, and then ask ‘Who can do this?” followed with “Show me” you will trigger mastery behavior. They will work until they can master that skill so they can demonstrate.
If you really want to ratchet up skill acquisition, find a peer who can do it and have him or her demonstrate it for the group. Peer to peer teaching is a very powerful teaching tool!
