A few months back, I saw a meme of two guys holding signs.
One sign read “Free hugs”. The guy next to him had a sign that read “deluxe hugs $2”.
The only difference to raise the price of the hug was tacking a special word on the front.
A few days ago, we were in line at the store and my wife saw a candy package that had the word “deluxe” in it. She looks at me and asks,
”What the heck makes that candy deluxe?”
I immediately thought of that hug meme. What made that candy so special compared the other selections?
”It had to try out, and had paid trainers…” I quipped.
We both laughed wildly at that one, having had to deal with “The Elite Premier National Football Academy” concept in the past. Youth sports has gone a bit overboard treating our kids like little professional adults. What 8 year old needs to pay $3000 a year and buy six sets of uniforms just to play a sport?
Trust me when I say, the word elite or premier does not suddenly bestow excellence on a club and therefore on you, as a coach, or on your kid. I know this first hand.
In this episode, I have a little Reed Rage and discuss the OverEliting of youth sports. Just stop trying to turn them pro at age 8 please…
Tune in to hear me rage…
