Every athlete has a voice in his or her head during performances. In fact, all of us have voices guiding our decisions, actions, and beliefs. Those voices are not simply coming from our own brain, but are influenced by the voices of people around us.
As coaches, we create the voices in our athletes’ heads and must be very aware of what we do and say to ensure the voices are ones of power and not peril.
Treating athletes poorly, demeaning them berating them, and calling them names (a very common occurrence in youth sport coaching) will demolish their identities, create negative memories, drive a negative voice, and do long term damage. Be very careful what you say.
Your influence is never neutral and you do not get to choose what they remember. You only get to choose what you say and do. Make it positive.
As promised, here is the link to the End Bullying and Abuse in Sport Summit: (it is FREE all this weekend and you will NOT find this information at any convention or coaching course).
